Filter Media Pad Holding Frames — Air Filter Frames & Holder Assemblies

Filter media pad holding frames — also called air filter frames, pad filter holders, or filter holding frames — are rigid metal frames that hold a replaceable flat media pad (fiberglass, polyester, synthetic, or specialty media) in a filter slot or duct opening. The frame itself is a permanent fixture; the media pad inside it is the replaceable component. Metal Air Filters manufactures pad holding frames in standard nominal sizes from 12×20 through 25×25 and beyond, in 1” and 2” depths, with and without a retainer gate to hold the media pad in place during system operation. All frames are manufactured in the USA and are available in custom-cut dimensions for any non-standard opening.

Pad holding frames are used wherever the filtration system uses a consumable flat media pad rather than a rigid self-contained filter cartridge. That configuration is common in commercial and industrial HVAC: make-up air units (MUAs), large air handling units (AHUs), roof curb filter sections, and any installation where the filter housing was designed around a flat pad rather than a box-type filter. The frame provides the rigid structure and sealing perimeter that holds the pad flat against the airflow, preventing bypass gaps at the edges. The media pad is removed and replaced at the scheduled service interval; the frame stays in place.

Product Overview — What Is a Filter Media Pad Holding Frame?

A filter media pad holding frame is a two-part filter assembly concept: the frame is a rigid aluminum perimeter that fits into a filter slot or mounts to a duct opening, and the media pad is a flat sheet of filter material that slides into the frame and is held flat by the frame walls and, on models with a retainer gate, by a hinged or removable retention bar that locks across the face of the pad. When the media pad is loaded with dust and debris, it is slid out and replaced — the frame stays in the housing. This is analogous to a picture frame holding a canvas: the canvas changes, the frame is permanent.

The pad-and-frame configuration exists because in large commercial and industrial filter housings, rigid cartridge-type filters (the kind used in residential HVAC) are impractical at the scale required. A 24×30×2 pad holding frame holds approximately three times the media face area of a standard 20×20×1 residential filter, accommodates any flat media type (fiberglass, polyester, MERV-rated pleated pad stock, activated carbon pad stock), and can be changed without removing or replacing the frame hardware. In high-volume commercial maintenance, this reduces filter change time and eliminates the need to stock a variety of rigid-frame cartridge filters in different depths.

Metal Air Filters manufactures two primary frame configurations: the HP Series (galvanized steel punch-out holding frame, for standard commercial applications) and the aluminum nominal pad holding frame with and without retainer gate (for lighter duty and residential applications). Both series are available in a wide range of standard nominal sizes and in custom-fabricated dimensions for any non-standard opening.

The retainer gate option is particularly important in systems where the filter slot is oriented vertically or at an angle, or where high-velocity airflow could displace an unsecured pad. Without a retainer gate, a flat media pad is held in place only by the frame walls — acceptable in horizontal face-up installations at low to medium velocity. With a retainer gate (a spring-loaded bar that locks across the face of the pad), the media is positively retained regardless of orientation or airflow velocity, and cannot be drawn into the system if the fan pressure differential increases.

Frame Series and Configurations

HP Series — Galvanized Steel Punch-Out Holding Frame

The HP Series galvanized steel punch-out media pad holding frame is a heavy-duty commercial frame fabricated from galvanized steel with a punch-out grid face that supports the media pad across its full face area. The punch-out pattern prevents the flat media from bulging or deforming under positive airflow pressure, which is critical in higher-velocity commercial system applications where an unsupported flat pad can bow inward and reduce effective filter face area. The galvanized steel construction provides higher structural rigidity than aluminum at the same wall thickness, making the HP Series the correct choice for large-format commercial filter sections, high-velocity make-up air units, and industrial ventilation applications. Available in standard commercial sizes; the HPO101220 (10×12×20) is the most common commercial stock size.

Open-Face Pad Holding Frame — Without Retainer Gate

The standard aluminum nominal pad holding frame is a lightweight one-piece aluminum frame with open faces on both sides. The media pad slides into the slot formed by the inner frame wall on all four sides and is held flat by the frame geometry. The open-face design provides maximum media exposure to the airflow and minimum pressure drop from the frame hardware itself. This configuration is appropriate for horizontal installations at standard residential and light-commercial airflow velocities where gravity and moderate static pressure hold the pad against the downstream face. Available in a wide range of standard nominal sizes from 12×20 through 25×25 in 1” and 2” depths.

HPGG Series — Galvanized Steel Pad Holding Frame With Retainer Gate

The retainer gate version of the HPGG Series galvanized steel pad holding frame adds a spring-loaded retention bar that pivots across the upstream face of the media pad and locks it in place. Opening the gate gives full access to the media for removal and replacement; closing and latching the gate secures the pad against displacement by airflow or gravity. The retainer gate version is recommended for: (1) vertical or angled filter slot orientations where the pad would otherwise fall out of the frame; (2) high-velocity installations where static pressure differential across the filter face could pull the pad toward the fan; (3) any installation where access to the filter is infrequent and vibration could gradually displace an unsecured pad over time. The four product shop pages listed below — the only pad holding frame pages currently generating search impressions — are all retainer gate configurations.

Installation Instructions

Installing a pad holding frame and media pad requires confirming three things before you start: the correct frame dimensions, the correct media pad dimensions, and the appropriate retainer configuration for your system orientation and airflow velocity.

Installing the Frame

  1. Measure the filter slot opening in your duct, air handler, or filter housing. The frame’s nominal dimension corresponds to the slot opening dimension — a 20×24 frame fits a filter slot labeled 20×24. Ensure the slot depth accommodates a 1” or 2” frame without binding against the back of the housing.
  2. Remove any existing filter or frame from the slot. Clean the slot walls of dust and debris. Inspect the slot for any deformation that might prevent the new frame from seating flat on all four sides.
  3. Slide the frame into the slot. The frame should fit with light resistance and seat flush with the slot opening face. On models with a retainer gate, the gate should be on the upstream (incoming air) side for easy access during media changes without requiring full frame removal.
  4. Secure the frame if the housing has retaining hardware (tabs, screws, or a locking rail). On permanently mounted frames in commercial housings, the frame is typically secured with sheet metal screws through the side walls of the frame into the duct section.

Loading the Media Pad

  1. Cut or select the media pad to match the frame’s inner opening dimension. The media pad should be cut approximately 1/4” oversize on each face dimension to ensure a snug fit against the inner frame walls with no gap at the edges. A pad that is undersized will leave a bypass gap; a pad that is significantly oversized will buckle and deform in the frame.
  2. Open the retainer gate (on gate models) or access the frame from the open face. Slide the media pad into the frame, seating it flat against the downstream face wall. Ensure all four edges contact the frame wall without gaps.
  3. Close and latch the retainer gate (on gate models) across the upstream face of the media pad. The gate should contact the full width of the pad face without bowing the media. Restore the system to service.

Changing the Media Pad

Media pad changes on gate models are designed to be done quickly: open the gate, slide the loaded pad out, slide a fresh pad in, close the gate. The frame does not need to be removed from the duct. On open-face models, the frame may need to be partially slid out of the slot to allow pad access depending on the housing geometry. In either case, the frame itself is not consumed — only the pad stock is replaced at each service interval.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a filter media pad holding frame?

A filter media pad holding frame is a rigid aluminum or galvanized steel perimeter frame that holds a flat filter media pad (fiberglass, polyester, or other flat filter stock) in a duct opening or filter slot. The frame itself is a permanent or semi-permanent fixture in the housing; the media pad is the consumable that is replaced at each filter change interval. It is also called an air filter frame, filter holder, pad filter frame, holding frame, or media frame depending on the industry and application.

Do I need the retainer gate version or the open-face version?

Use the retainer gate version if: your filter slot is vertical or angled (gravity would pull the pad out), your system operates at higher airflow velocities (the pressure differential could pull or push the pad toward the fan), or you want positive confirmation that the media is secured during operation. Use the open-face version if: your filter is horizontal face-up at standard residential or light-commercial airflow velocity, access is easy and you prefer the lower cost, and gravity holds the pad in place adequately. When in doubt, the retainer gate version is the more reliable option and costs only a few dollars more.

What media pad do I use with a holding frame?

Any flat filter media pad stock cut to the frame inner opening dimension plus approximately 1/4” on each face dimension for a snug fit. Common media pad types include: standard fiberglass filter media (MERV 1–4), synthetic polyester media (MERV 4–8), pleated media pads (MERV 8–13), activated carbon media pads (for odor applications), and specialty industrial media. The frame is media-agnostic — it holds whatever flat pad you cut to fit it. Metal Air Filters does not supply the media pad stock itself; we manufacture the frame only. Media pad stock is available from HVAC distributors and building supply suppliers by the roll or pre-cut sheet.

What is the difference between 1-inch and 2-inch depth frames?

The depth determines how thick a media pad the frame can hold. A 1” (actual 7/8”) frame holds thin flat media pads, including standard fiberglass roll media cut to size. A 2” (actual 1-3/4”) frame holds thicker pleated pad stock or double-thickness flat media, providing more media surface area and higher dust holding capacity before the pad needs replacement. The 2” frame also accommodates the same standard 2” media cabinet pads used in residential high-efficiency filter systems. Match the depth to the media type you plan to use — a pad thicker than the frame depth will not seat correctly.

Can I use a pad holding frame as a direct replacement for my existing filter?

Yes, if your existing filter slot dimensions match a standard nominal frame size. A pad holding frame installed in a slot that previously held a rigid-cartridge filter (aluminum mesh, pleated, or flat fiberglass panel) converts the installation from a rigid replaceable filter to a pad-and-frame system. The conversion makes sense when: you want the flexibility to use different media types at different service points, when replacement filter cartridges are hard to source in your size, or when the media pad change frequency is high enough to justify the lower per-change cost of bulk pad stock over individual filter cartridges.

My opening is an odd size. Can you make a custom frame?

Yes. We fabricate custom pad holding frames to any exact face dimension and depth. The custom frame is built from the same aluminum alloy to the same ±1/16” tolerance as our standard stock frames. Contact us with your exact slot dimensions (width × height × depth to the nearest 1/16”) and whether you need a retainer gate. Quotes are turned around same business day. You can also order directly through our custom filter configurator.

What is the HP Series punch-out frame, and when should I use it?

The HP Series galvanized steel punch-out holding frame is a heavy-duty commercial frame with a punched-hole grid pattern across both faces that supports and retains the media pad across its full area. The grid prevents the flat pad from bowing under positive airflow pressure in high-velocity commercial and industrial applications — a problem that can occur with open-face frames at higher system static pressures. Use the HP Series for make-up air units, large commercial AHUs, and any installation where airflow velocity is high enough that a supported face is necessary to maintain filter media integrity.

Are your filter holding frames made in the USA?

Yes. All Metal Air Filters products, including the full pad holding frame and filter frame line, are manufactured in the USA at our facility operating since 1986. Both the aluminum nominal series and the galvanized HP Series frames are fabricated in-house.

What is the minimum order quantity for a frame?

One piece. Stock frames can be ordered individually. Custom-fabricated frames are also available at a one-piece minimum. If you need large quantities for a commercial retrofit or a fleet of units, contact us for a volume quote — quantity pricing is available.
